Taking Pretend Play Seriously
As a child, I played a lot of pretend office. I'd set up a table and chairs in my room with all the office supplies, books, and equipment I could find around the house. Then my friends and I would conduct "business." One day I was a doctor's receptionist or an accountant. The next I was a store owner or librarian. Little did I know that my interests in offices weren't arbitrary.
They were written in the stars. Or more accurately, in my astrological birth chart. A birth chart is a developmental blueprint of the planets at the moment of birth. Planets represent drives and motivations. Each occurs in a specific zodiac sign, which gives it a special flavor. The planetary configuration is arranged in a circular wheel divided into 12 sections, or Houses. Each house is a core area of growth and self-understanding.If my parents had had my birth chart when I was young, they would have seen that my South Node of the Moon was in the 6th House. The South Node represents natural talents we're born with and tend to take for granted. The 6th House is work and health - how we organize and take care of ourselves and become skillful so we can be of service. Time management and planning abilities are here as well, two of my interests to this day.Yes, my playing pretend office was creative and imaginative. But it was also a serious part of who I was naturally, a part that needed to be expressed.
When I played office, I was practicing for my future self, not just having fun and keeping myself busy. These days there are a much wider assortment of educational toys available than when I was a kid. Now parents can provide their children with all kinds of pretend play opportunities. If they have their child's birth chart, they may understand sooner what kinds of pretend games and toys might be appropriate. If they don't, they should take seriously their child's cues, no matter how odd or outlandish the interest might seem. After all, It may be written in their stars.
