Exercising Our Children

Lately, the percentage of overweight children is on the rise. With the newest developments of video games, television programs and such, children are not getting as much exercise as they need. Their diets are consisting of more "junk" food because it is easier to grab while on the go. Yet, the question of how much exercise does your child need still remains. As well as, what does exercise consist of?

When you think of exercise, you probably picture yourself at the gym standing next to a beefy trainer who has you tuning in with muscles you haven't felt since high school. But unless you are bodybuilding your three year old, there is no need for a Hulk of a trainer to whip your baby in to shape. You can take the role of "trainer" yourself and make sure your child is getting the exercise they need. While focusing on endurance, strength, and flexibility, you can easily insure that your youngster is being provided with optimal exercise. At the playground, you see those three elements of fitness everywhere. Your children are playing Tag; you see an example of endurance. Crossing the monkey bars would utilize their strength, and simply bending down to tie their shoes is flexibility.

Daily exercise is crucial. But how much should they get a day? Well, for infants, you just need to focus on their motor development. Toddlers, however, need at least an hour and a half. This does not mean that you need to construct an exercise program, though you could. Preschoolers need about two hours and school children need at least an hour plus. Have new activities for them every day; such as riding a bicycle, playing basketball, soccer, etc. Or just run them around the jungle gym at a playground or take them swimming.

Lets make more than an effort. Make it part of your families daily lives to exercise and eat well balanced diets. Your children will be healthier for it; now what is the harm in that?

Healthy Snacks

While on the go, it can be frustrating when your children start to get hungry and you have no backup. The last thing you want to do is stop at a fast food joint just because it is easy. Prepare ahead of time if you plan on going on a trip. Pack up those goodies yourself, and make sure they are fresh and are unprocessed. You don't want a snack that is packed full of sugars and icky preservatives.

When you pack up these snacks, be mindful of the contents you are putting together so you can have a balance of carbohydrates, fat, protein, and fiber. It will ensure that your children keep a healthy blood sugar level. Great examples would be celery and peanut butter, cheese and crackers, or tortilla chips and bean dip. Equip yourself with these healthy snacks, and be prepared with easy storage containers.

Try to avoid the drive-thru at all costs. Especially when you are going on a long trip, your children will not have much of a chance to get out and run off all of that not-so-healthy food. Plus, you want to instill in your children good eating habits that they will be able to carry on as they grow.

Does Your Child Get Adequate Exercise?

As a parent you have numerous worries every day, is your child eating enough good foods? Is your child doing well in school? Is your child developing at the pace he or she should? Is your child exercising enough? All of these are valid worries and now more so than ever, childhood obesity is becoming a larger problem (no pun intended) than ever - but there are steps you can take to keep your child out of this group.

First of all, leave healthy choices out for snacks. Children tend to grab whatever is easiest and "there" - get rid of the fruit roll ups, chips and crackers and substitute those items with real fruits, carrot sticks or other veggies chilled and crunchy, and if your child likes a sandwich for an afterschool snack, make it a healthy one with fillings ranging from tofu to cheese to peanut butter.

Teach your child to watch portions. Once you start going over what a serving size actually is, your child may discover that he's actually been eating 2 or more servings of cereal or crackers at a sitting - those calories add up and the end result isn't good health. Start teaching your kiddo to make good choices now and they'll carry that lesson into their adult years.

Getting up and exercising is another way for kids to stay fit. In the colder areas of the United States, going outside and playing every day isn't an option so indoor activities have to . If your child enjoys playing video games or being on the computer - let him but limit those activities so they don't fore go healthier pursuits.

Having something to exercise on such as an Airwalker is also a great idea. It's fun and it gets the whole body moving. Another way to get your kids moving is to exercise with them, make some time to get up and stretch your bodies and move to some music - 10-minutes a day is even enough - just do a little exercise!

Teach your kids to make good choices with their foods and their bodies; in doing so you'll raise a healthy young person that make healthy decisions instead of another obesity statistic.

It's a Bicycle, It's a Skateboard...It's a SKOOOCH!

For over ten years, Skoooch has quietly been making kids all over the world very happy with their combination skateboard and bicycle scooter.

The beauty of a Skooch is that kids can learn to ride it with a very small learning curve unlike both skateboards and bicycles that usually cause injuries (although mostly minor) during the "learning to ride" process.

The Skoooch will also encourage your kids to get away from their computer screens and video games and go outside and get some exercise. The age appropriate range for Skoooch is 3-6 years of age. Kids that are too big for a scooting toy and too small for a "big kids bike" will love to ride their very own Skooch.

As with any riding toy, make sure that your kids wear the appropriate safety gear when riding this toy. This can include a helmet and knee and elbow pads. The Skoooch has dual read skids and a hand brake that most children learn to use with ease. The non-skid footboard makes it easy for little feet to grip and best of all, the Skoooch comes 98% assembled in the box, so no waiting to go play!

Blast Off into Learning

If you are like most parents, you tell your child that they can become whatever they choose to become. Therefore, naturally, you want to help them realize and achieve their potential. Things that you do or say as a parent, and as a person, stay with them for the rest of their lives.

These life lessons can be of monumental proportions or they can be on a smaller scale. It is important to remember that even those small ones make a big impact on your child. Remember that children can become easily frustrated and while you don't want every lesson to be overly simple you do want immediate goals to be within reach and age appropriate.

No matter what they are actually doing they are also learning all the time. Help them pick out little lessons that they may not realize they have learned. It may be something along the "social graces" line when they were polite or perhaps they correctly spelled a word or understood its meaning. Kids love it when you make a big deal out of something they have done, because to you it was perhaps small and obvious, but to them nothing is small and obvious.

It is also important to let them play and have fun. You know that they are still learning during "fun times" but they do not have to know that. Maybe along with the you can be anything speech a fun visual aide would be in order. If you are telling your child that they can even be an astronaut why not include the Rocket Blast Off Play House. It is easy to assemble, has a padded door, roof and shutters all designed to stimulate your child's imagination. Remember, if they can dream it, they can become it.

Toys That Keep Kids Moving

You hear all the time on the news today that it is more important than ever to make sure that children grow up learning that exercise is good for them. With the obesity rate steadily climbing, it is a great idea to make sure that your children always have plenty of fun ways to remain active. After all, exercise can be fun as well as beneficial to their health.

For some parents, the best way to get their kids involved in exercise is to present it to them in the form of play. Once kids begin to explore and have fun through movement, they end up forgetting that they are even exercising and simply focus on having a good time. Whether you have a day care within your home or you are just looking for a nice way to get your children moving, there is nothing quite like the Extendable See Saw.

Just like some of the teeter-totters that you remember from the playground when you were a child, the Extendable See Saw is a great indoor or outdoor piece of equipment that is sure to get your children involved in exercise. With three different height positions, this see saw will even be able to grow with your child so it can be used often throughout the years.

Play and socialization are two terrific ways to build both motor and social skills. When you blend exercise in with these two elements, you pretty much have an excellent activity that is just right for any child!
