Winter Vacation from School: Know What?

The holidays are meant to be fun for kids and adults alike, but before you rush out and buy the latest and greatest toys this year, stop and think. You want to choose toys and games your kids will love, but since these may make up the bulk of his playthings for the coming year, you want them to have some educational value as well.

Don't worry, you can find great gifts that will stimulate his brain without being blatantly educational. Your kids won’t even know the difference!

Our favorite kinds of toys for both learning and hours of fun?

Memory Games: These can be as simple as a few cards with various pictures on them, or more complex versions made from a variety of materials and with dozens of numbers, shapes, colors, and pictures for kids to find. This not only enhances memory, but is a fun way to get more than one child involved for some healthy competition.

Blocks and Stacking toys: Kids can use these to create any number of things, encouraging healthy imaginations while enhancing hand eye coordination and find motor skills. They also begin to learn the difference between sizes. For instance, large blocks are better placed at the bottom and smaller blocks on top.

Sorting games
: There are several varieties of sorting games to choose from, many of which offer a variety of ways to play. Kids can sort items based on color, numbers, shapes, letters, and other things. This will help your child improve memory and get them ready for beginning school.

Writing and Drawing Sets: You can choose writing sets that are designed to help children learn numbers or letters, or drawings sets which help their imaginations take flight. Both are excellent options for young children because they provide hours of entertainment, while also improving fine motor skills and a sense of creativity. Additionally, studies have shown that children who participate in the arts also have higher math and science scores than those who don’t. So encourage your Picasso to get creative!

Waiting Room Play tables: Whether sand, beads, or water, play tables are a fun way for kids to use their imaginations. They are also perfect for families with multiple young children since larger models can accommodate up to 6 children. Bead tables are also a great tool for teaching colors, counting, and other important skills.

Classroom Storage: Making Learning Fun

An organized classroom is a fun and efficient classroom. To maximize daily schedules, teachers need to organize their materials for easier reference so they can separate materials they use everyday from materials periodically. Storage can be exciting. Classroom storage can be a fun way to learn because you can use book displays as libraries and cubbies as mail boxes. Assign students jobs and they naturally become interested in the subject.

You can have a cubby assigned to each student so they can have a place to keep their art supplies, assignments, & books. Teachers can also use the cubbies to give the students projects, leave notes or give home work.

Its also a fun way for students to learn responsibility in the classroom and for them to get to know their classmates names. Many cubbies, such as the 10 Tray Mobile Storage Unit, come with removable plastic drawers.

For students who are still learning to read, each plastic draw can be labeled with a picture of the item that is inside. Students will love being called on to retrieve an item for the teacher or a classmate. Books that are displayed in an orderly and eye catching fashion will not only help the classroom look organized but it will also encourage the students to read. Books are part of the classroom, its common for classrooms to have lot of books for quiet reading or book reports. If you arrange the books in an orderly fashion this will encourage the students to check them out.

Cubbies can help teachers showcase books and display books in a manner that will interest the students. The best way to display the books is to place them in an angle that will show the front cover instead of putting them in a line showing just the spines. Students have materials that they need to carry around, portable storage is just the thing for this. Retrievable storage cubbies such as the See, Store and Take-Along Storage Cart, is equipped with lids that have handles. You will find that students like carrying them around and take pride in it.

Organizing the classroom using cubbies is fun and easy, it can also be an activity to keep them busy while the teacher is involved with other projects. Also, for super safe storage solutions make sure to check out the tip me not line of school furniture from Wood Designs.

Getting Your Childrens Space Back to School Ready

Nobody likes homework. Your kids hate doing it, and odds are, you don't enjoy trying to help them solve eighth grade algebra any better. However, it's a part of life and if presse we may even have to agree that it's an important part. Luckily, you can help take the pain out of nightly homework duties by making sure your child has a neatly organized space in which to do his assignments. This area should include the basics like pens and pencils, and also a comfortable desk and chair placed in a quiet area.

SensoryEdge offers a unique line of kids desks from Room magic, KidKraft, and Wild Zoo. All of them made for a child's size and needs. Having a desk area tailored to your child is more important than you may think. Adult products are often too high up and hard to reach for a child to sit comfortably, and an uncomfortable kid is going to spend even less time concentrating on studies and more time fidgeting or getting up altogether.

The desks offered by Room Magic also feature spacious designs that can hold everything from books to pencils to calculators and erasers. Many models even feature hutches, like our Little Lizard or Tropical Sea varieties, providing even more room for storing the essentials. They’re also comfortable and roomy. It is important to offer a desk chair that offers maximum comfort to avoid back aches which are not only painful, but distracting.

It's also important to place the desk in the right area of your home to avoid distractions. Rooms where other children may be working or playing or areas where there are televisions and computers are probably not the best places to put your child's homework desk. (Keep the computer in another room, like an office or living room, and make homework space separate from the family's office space. If your child needs the computer for doing research or homework help, give him a set time limit to avoid distractions like MySpace or gaming sites.)

If there is no private corner in which to put your child's desk, his bedroom will suffice. If he already has a television or computer located in his room, set limits and stick to them. These may include not watching any TV at all until homework is complete and no web surfing other than research. Give time limits for each assignment. Most importantly, if you catch him breaking the rules, follow through with consequences. Remove the TV, or if that is not feasible, find out if you cable or satellite provider has a way to lock all programming from use.

Lastly, let your child have a hand in choosing the overall style of his homework space. Room Magic desks come in various themes and designs, so there is something there any child will appreciate. Designate a corner to homework and allow your child to pick out utensils and decor items to place there. Find wall hangings or murals to correlate with the desk. You may even purchase a room divider for added privacy. Make sure all supplies are easily within reach.

Now all that's left to do is hope the teacher goes easy on him.

Go Outside!

Remember what your parents preached to you oh, so long ago? Your mom would be standing in the kitchen, hands on her hips telling you to pick one: inside or out. But what that really meant was you were going outside because you didnt choose quick enough. Nowadays, children love their video games, the television, and the newest technology. But we are lacking in the go-outside-and-play department. What happened to taking a stick and a garden hose and turning them in to a world of pirates and sea creatures? Or if you are one to continuously push your children to playing outside, take note of this spiffy device: the Kids Outdoor Table with Umbrella by KidKraft.

Once your kiddies get a look at this awesome picnic table, they will want to have their lunches outside. While they are outside munching on their meal, bring out a few crafts to get their hands on. It will keep them outside in the nice warm sun and so what if you had to bribe them in a way? They are outside, right? Enjoy the weather and once you are done, hang their artwork on the refrigerator so they can be proud of the work they have done.

Levels of Discovery Spring Sale 10% off at SensoryEdge

Our friends at Levels of Discovery asked us to run a 10% off sale on all LOD items until April 25th. Levels of Discovery offers a very unique line of painted kids furniture including table and chair sets, step stools, toy boxes, vanities, and more.

About Levels of Discovery:

After spending most of his adult life in the development of emotion-based products for Hallmark, The Franklin Mint and Enesco, Jeff Hutsell decided that he wanted to bring fun and innovative children's products to the marketplace that are truly something special. Thinking back over the years with his own three children, he realized that there is nothing so wonderful as to see the look of sheer delight on a child's face when they've discovered something new and unexpected! The name of our company comes from a lesson Jeff learned about creating products that will touch people's lives. Anyone can produce a product that is exactly what it appears to be. He wanted to take that a step further and create products that allow children to discover the "unexpected"!

An example from the Rock A Buddies product line shows what he means. The award-winning Schoolhouse Rocker has a fun "school" theme with primary colors, apple finials and movable abacus beads to help little ones learn counting and colors. Take another look and you'll find a flip-up desk (great for reading and writing) and an armrest pencil box with a sliding lid. Pull the chalk on the seat and the music box plays the "ABC Song!". Look again, and you'll find an understamp beneath the seat that can be "personalized" with the child's name, the name of the gift-giver and the special occasion when the chair was received.

We invite you to spend some time with us and discover all the little "extras" you'll find at Levels of Discovery! Thanks again for visiting our site and come back often!

The Weekly WOW! at SensoryEdge

The Weekly WOW! is your opportunity to get a great deal on a piece of kids furniture or a cool toy. We've gone to our manufacturers and asked them to give us great deals in order to showcase their product line. Sometimes the Weekly WOW! will be one item, other times it'll be a setor all the products in a particular line. The Weekly WOW! will run from Monday through Sunday.

This weeks Weekly WOW! is the "Go Man Go" and "Poodles in Paris" line by LC Creations. We pestered our friend Chris over at LC Creations until he caved in and allowed us to go low low low on two of his newest lines.

LC Creations is a designer and manufacturer of high quality children’s furniture and accessories specializing in beautifully hand-crafted pieces to decorate and inspire the imagination of both children and parents.

Jumpin' Fun!

Are your kids energetic? Really love to move around? Even though spring is here, the days are cold, wet and not too kid-friendly for outdoor play in many areas of the country. If your kids are begging to do something that will keep them on the move but outdoors just isn't an option yet, consider the fun in a trampoline.

The Kids Folding Trampoline has an easy-to-hold handle that will allow your kids to both exercise and be safe. The trampoline can be used either indoors or out and has a tough weatherproof mat and tublar steel frame with a durable coated finish. For extra safety, the padded cover around the mat cushions the frame and prevents children from stepping through the bungee cord. The handle simply screws off and the legs fold down for ease of storage. When you're ready to put this trampoline up for the day, it simply fold and you can scoot it under a bed or in a closet.

The assembly is very easy. The mat comes with a bungee cord that you simply wind through the mat and attach around the frame pulling tightly as you go around. The result is a fun and safe surface for bouncing and no springs!

Make Your Child's First Sleep Over Party a Success

If your young child started school this year, chances are good that he or she has already been to one or more sleep over parties. If your kiddo is clamoring to have a sleep over of their own, do a little planning and you'll have a perfect night for everyone.

First of all, decide on the night to have your sleep over. Then have your child decide how many friends to invite over. A rule of thumb for parties both birthday and sleep overs is to invite the same number of friends as your child's age plus one. So if your child is 7-years old then inviting 8 friends would be about the maximum kids to have in your home at once.

Then let your child choose a few snacks. Try and keep them to healthy snacks instead of junk, you really do not want a house full of sugared up kids to keep track of. Thinly sliced veggies with ranch dip, cheese and crackers, cut up fruits such as apples and melons along with grapes and strawberries are usually hits. You can make a warm snack by cutting up potatoes into thin wedges and shaking them in olive oil and then a few spices (your choice) and then cooking until done and crisp on the edges. Kids eat these up! Have some fun games planned. You can use standard party games, Pictionary type games or guessing games usually go over well.

As far as sleeping, obviously all the kids won't fit into one bed so they will be sacking out on the floor. It's idea if you have a game room or play room; however if you don't - the living room is a good option too. That way you can keep tabs on everyone. If you child doesn't already have one, make sure that he or she has a sleeping bag and on the invitations, put down that each child will need to bring a sleeping roll or sleeping bag.

Just do a little planning in advance and your child's first sleep over will be the best!
