Students cheer for mutants coming to their school and this means you can use Pokémon Go to inspire student creativity.  At an elementary school in Brazil – like at many elementary schools across the world – the Pokémon Go phenomenon was having a huge impact on the children’s culture.

What is Pokémon Go? What are PokéStops?

At first, one art teacher felt confused by the phenomenon, but she took the opportunity to listen and learn about it from her students. It gave her an idea for her art class: start a real-world version, called Mutant Go, around the school. Students created works of art on adhesive paper and posted them around the school and its grounds – often in hidden places, so that students had to search for them, just like in the Pokémon game.

The teacher noticed that students became more engaged in both the creation and observation of art around campus. The game gave them a context not only for creating and consuming art, but also for discussing it among themselves. But it also made them more aware about the school itself: they came to have a more comprehensive view of its layout and resources. Finally, it ignited a zeal for discovery that spilled over into other areas, enriching the learning process overall.
